| My name is Larry McKinzie and I would like to be the next Houston City Council person for District D. District D has been my home all forty years of my life and I would like to represent the people that live in District D. My parents are Lacy and Myrtle McKinzie (McDaniel). I attended Douglas MacArthur and River Oaks Elementary. After attending River Oaks, I went to Sidney Lanier Middle School. I graduated high school from Ross Shaw Sterling. Prairie View A&M University is the university that I attended and graduated. My major was Biology and my minor was Chemistry. During my years at Prairie View, I had the opportunity to attend Texas Southern University, Houston Community College and the University of Houston during the Summers. I participated in the Student Government Association as Vice-president of Academic Affairs, Pan-Hellenic council as a student representative and the University Academic Council as a student representative . My friend, Jeff Rector and I founded a student organization called the Wholistic Afrikan Study Organization. The organization boasted an active membership of thirty-eight well-read, politically active members. During my college years, I became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, Prince Hall Affiliated Masons and the NAACP. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Biology, I continued my education at Ben Taub’s School of Medical Technology. I became a board certified Medical Technologist (ASCP) and my first job was as a technologist for the Ryan White grant. I always knew that I would serve the community in which I lived. While working as a technologist, I met many people from many different walks of life. It seemed that many people were being forgotten or left behind. At the same time that I was a Medical Technologist for the Ryan White Grant, I coached little league baseball at Yellowstone Park. The league’s manager was Ms. Ilya Crow. As a child, I played little league baseball for Saint Mary’s United Methodist Church. Coaching little league baseball made me realize even more a need to serve. After working as a medical technologist for the Harris County Hospital District and Labcorp Inc., I began substitute teaching at Albert Thomas Middle School in 1995. In the school year 1998 - 1999, I began teaching full-time at my alma mater, Ross Shaw Sterling High School in Houston’s area known as South Park. From 1999 through 2001, I taught at Dowling Middle School as a Behavior Teacher. In 2001, I began teaching down the street from my home at Ezekiel Cullen Middle School. My need to serve became even more evident as I began to teach and coach at Cullen Middle School. I married in 1999. My desire to affect my community in a positive manner only increased. My students (my neighbors) voiced that they felt as if no one outside of their homes listened to them. I instructed them to use the chain of command and if the chain of command did not work to constructively create a legal path to achieve their needs and their wants. I also told them that one day I would run for a political office and would look for them to at least vote and take their parents with them. My time is now, and I am asking for them and those living in District D to elect me City Council person. My aim is to serve and represent those in the community in which I reside. My campaign begins at the Grassroots level and after that the sky's the limit. I have lived in District D all my life and I remember a time when my community was community-minded; everyone counted and everyone cared… It’s Time to Become Caring, Counted and Community-Minded Again !
